What to do when emotions get in the way of good business

Ever had a client do something that made you secretly furious – and you just couldn’t work with them again?

Or had to speak in front of a crowd, or bring a treasured creation out into the spotlight, and felt sick with an irrational fear that you will be laughed back into a hidey hole?

Or been invited to hang out with some really cool people who could help your business move to the next level, but been struck by an inexplicable feeling of smallness… Your inner critic goes off, you feel unsteady on your feet and your words come out all garbled?

It’s a pretty broad range of situations, I know. And you could probably think of a host more examples. But what each of these scenarios has in common is an emotion.

An emotion that gets in the way of good business. Read More »

Ever felt like a victim to a client, your business or the economy?

You know what it’s like…

When the workload feels too high, the to-do list too long, the income too low, the client too challenging, the contractor too unreliable, the project too overwhelming…

It’s pretty natural to feel hopeless and helpless when circumstances outside of your control are frustrating the projects that are closest to your heart…

It happens to the best of us… (but there is a way through!)

When “knowing” isn’t enough… (you still can’t seem to make it happen)

How often have you said to yourself, “I know what I need to do, I just can’t seem to… (you can fill in the blank)

For example, one of my clients this week put it this way:

“I know I deserve to make good money in my business. I have the skills and I can even visualise it happening. But when it comes to the crunch, I just keep seeming to sabotage myself.”

Or another friend of mine recently shared:

“I know I’m worthwhile, but I just keep getting down about myself. It’s so frustrating!”

Maybe you can relate to one of these scenarios, or maybe you can think of other examples from your own life – where knowing the answer isn’t enough to solve the problem.

If knowledge is power, why does it sometimes seem to work against you?

How to avoid feeling like a fraud when you’re good, but not perfect.

Have you ever known someone who is really passionate about what they do? They are talented and skilled, and because they love it so much, they bring a ‘special something’ to their work…. Yet, they are plagued by doubts.

Like this yoga teacher I knew. She was deeply devoted to her work, a brilliant teacher and her students loved her. Yet, she once confided that she secretly worried, “How can I teach yoga, when my own yoga practice isn’t perfect?”

It’s suprising how many people never follow their passion as a business, because they want to be ‘perfect’ before they help others.

And those who do step out to share their skills with the world, can still be plagued by guilt because they aren’t… you guessed it, perfect!

If you can relate to any of these scenarios, you probably recognise the vicious cycle that underpins them:

How do you price transformation and inner peace?

Have you ever been out flying a big kite, way up high on a windy day?

There’s such a feeling of exhiliaration and freedom as the wind takes hold, and you let the string unravel and watch the kite soar…

It’s awesome. But let me get back to the kite in a moment.

As a business owner, you inevitably come to a point where you know you need to increase your prices… maybe your current prices aren’t really sustainable… But if you offer a service or product that is about making a difference in the world… about some kind of transformation for your customers or clients, it’s common to feel quite a bit of hesitance around pricing.

How do you measure “stress relief” or “inner peace” or even “satisfaction”?

What’s Mother’s Day really about? A revelation.

Have you ever felt like Mother’s Day (or Easter or Christmas or any other celebration – but I particularly get it with Mother’s Day) is kinda empty and shallow?

I mean, it’s awesome to have an opportuniy to appreciate mum… But a morning in bed with chocolate and flowers, or a facial, or a teapot… It can have this pink, fluffy, girly feeling to it. And sure, mother’s can be girly too… But mostly we are women. And you wonder… What do real women really want?

It’s mother’s day, and I’m lying in bed waiting for my husband and 2yo to bring me breakfast. I decided to get on the laptop to write this post because a) 2 year olds take quite a while to prepare breakfast, and I’m done sleeping… and b) I’ve been wanting to share the revelation in this email I read last night… It’s completely changed my view of mother’s day! Are you taking care of the most important thing in your business?

Okay, so my strong intention to produce a weekly blog article has, well, um, faltered.

I have a good excuse, of course. In fact a number of them. But I had a big wakeup call the other day when I attended a workshop which one of my readers was also attending. She said to me, “I’m so glad to see you here. I haven’t been receiving your emails lately… And I was beginning to worry about you!

Yikes! Here was I, complacently thinking that an extra week here or there wouldn’t make much difference. Isn’t it funny how we can talk ourselves into insignificance!

What really matters (online)…

You know, my web developer always tells me that on the internet, and on your website “Content is King.”

Wanna know what he means? Read More »

Why is ‘non-attachment’ so important in getting what you want?

This story was told to me by Brandon Bays during a profound retreat that she runs called “The Abundance Retreat”.

I do not know of the origins – if you do, please enlighten me.

And I have written it here from memory – so if my memory has taken creative license with the details, I hope that the essential transmission of the message remains intact…

Do you have the Hedgehog working for your business?

Ok, so I’ve had a tough month. Business-wise.

Well, actually, life-wise. As in life has been happening, bringing a confluence of intense challenges. And in tending to the needs of the moment, my business has practically ground to a halt.

I actually started wondering if this was some kind of ‘divine sign’ that I should give it up altogether…

Thankfully, I got another ‘divine sign’ that suggested something else entirely… Read More »

Does your business make space for the rocks in your life?

Have you heard that story about the professor who fills a jar first with larger stones, then with pebbles, then sand? There’s various versions of it around on the internet, but here’s one to remind you:

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 5 centimeters in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full?

They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They agreed it was.

The students laughed. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognise that this is your life…

“The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

“Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

Anon.

The last few weeks have been incredibly intense here.  I mentioned a few posts ago that I’m pregnant… And in addition to the usual exhaustion, nausea and constant hunger, I’ve faced the scare of threatened miscarriage, followed by minor surgery to protect the pregnancy, and post-operative migraines as the spinal anaesthetic wore off.

So, um, business… What’s that again?

This week I feel relatively normal for the first time in ages (hooray!)… And I’ve had some moments to reflect on what it all means for me and for Soul Business. To have to grind to a halt for a month or more, then pick up the pieces and re-evaluate.

I’ve learned some powerful lessons for Soul Business. And I suspect they might be helpful for you and your business too… Read More »
